All A-Kindle About My Kindle!

One day, I flipped open my PDA and tried to read one of the ebooks in it.  After ten minutes, I gave up.  Age had taken a toll on my eyes.  I used to smile indulgently at those people who used big-screen e-readers and pat myself on the back for using a small PDA to read books.  Well, Time has a way of getting back at people like me.  Sigh. I tried increasing the font size on my PDA.  Have you ever tried to read a book on a screen that displayed only ten words a a time?  Go, go give it a try.  If only to laugh at me.  So I began my search for a big-screen replacement. The Amazon Kindle kept coming up in the course of my quest.  I didn't want an LCD screen with a backlight because they tire my eyes out pretty fast.  'Pretty fast' means four or five hours of reading.  Sometimes I like to go on ebook reading marathons.  People kept telling me that Amazon doesn't ship Kindles to Malaysia.  Amazon doesn't sell Kindle eb...

Dumb 'Technology' At Work

At work, I use the Internet a lot.  I email teachers info and documents, teachers respond with data, I maintain my online groups (looking after ten groups..), I check on what's new in the oh-so-many relevant websites..MOE, JPA, Treasury.... and I have come to depend on the net a lot. Today, I found out I couldn't access my groups.  The web address has been blocked because it is categorized under 'Message Boards and Forums'.  OMG... it is the message boards and forums that is so useful to teachers......... Argh... why are they treating us like kids who don't even know how to police ourselves??? They are punishing the thousands of legitimate users for the very few who abuse the network.  Is it worth it????

Keyboard Shortcuts & Me

I've been involved in many computer courses, as a participant and also a facilitator.  Sometimes when I step into a roomful of ICT-aware young so-and-so's, they look at me and immediately dismiss me as an 'auntie' who probably needed to be taught how to hold a mouse.  Auntie ah, the mouse you right-click and left-click like this one... Ah but sometimes I do get my revenge. You see, the kids nowadays learn computers from the cradle but their computers have mice and trackballs and joysticks.  The computer I learned how to use way back when only had a keyboard.  Mice back then were animals you chased with a broomstick..or a parang .  The first computers I used didn't have Windows.  They had DOS.  For those young 'uns out there, DOS has C prompts and A prompts and strings of code people memorized.  When we migrated to Wordstar and Wordperfect, we also had to memorize commands such as CTRL-TAB or CTRL-F.  If you mastered Wordperfect, you were almost a demigod bec...

Data Collection Glitches...

My head hurts... For the past one week, I've been dealing with what I call 'ICT glitches'. I've been collecting and compiling data from schools and for the most part, it's been a breeze. However, the glitches which sit like a pebble in my shoe are quite numerous. I've been given data in MS Word format, despite the fact that I distributed an MS Excel template. Try copy and paste data from MS Word to MS Excel and multiply that by about 400 entries. I guarantee a frustrating time. I've been given incomplete information, resulting in the following exchanges: Me : But this is not complete. X : Yes, I cannot get the info. Me : WHY?? X : The individuals forgot their serial number. Me : Isn't it in their document? X : They don't know where they put their document. Me : There are two documents that contain this info. X : Yes, they cannot find either one. Me : >< A similar exchange: Me : But this is not complete. X : Yes, I cannot get the info. Me...

The Words That Bring People To My Blog

Took a look at my counter...and found out the top ten keywords that search engines respond to with my blog address. 1. Fail Meja 2. PTK 3. Manual Prosedur Kerja 4. PTK3 DG44 5. PTK DG44 6. Oxymoron Lesson Plans 7. Oxymoron Lesson Plan 8. Oxymoron Worksheet 9. Kursus PTK DG 44 10. PTK DG 44 and among the strangest were 'wishabi', 'oxymoron for bill gates' and 'riding a dead horse solutions'. ??? Maybe I should set up databases for PTK and oxymoron lesson plans. What do you guys think? And this post will probably increase the probability of the above list being maintained...heh heh heh.

Brontok Attack...

Tonight I finally figured out what was wrong with my notebook. The first symptom I notice was a general slowing of the system. And to my horror, Folder Options under Tools was gone. My antivirus acted strangely and my Spybot Search and Destroy refused to update itself. Then I found a forum which described the symptoms so well. I had Brontok lurking inside my hard disk. And after searching the net forums for a solution, I found one: Brontok Washer. Thank heavens it worked. But now after such a scare, I'm backing up everything. *shiiiver...*

Facebook Is Driving Me Nuts!

Okay, okay... don't drag the lawyers out.  It's not Facebook that's driving me nuts.  It's my wonderful friends and family who wanna do things to me.  Oh for crying out loud, I've got : - 8 superpoke! friend requests - 1 what are you wearing invitation - 1 new wall post request - 2 zombies invitations - 1 oktoberfest invitation - 2 my aquarium requests - 2 werewolves requests - 2 top friends friend requests - 1 get superlatives invitation - 1 my room invitation - 3 vampires invitations - 1 wishabi request - 1 hottest friend request - 1 tattoos invitation - 1 describe me request - 2 slayers invitations - 1 likeness quiz request - 1 my kids invitation - 1 my cause invitation .... and a partridge in a pear tree?  Not. Just looking at the list is tiring.  What more delving deep into these requests and invitations... Unlike the Indian man in the Astro advert, I AIN'T GOT TIME! I dread to find out how many zombies I'm gonna get tomorrow.

Online Social Networking? Uhh..ookay...

When I was in university, calling home was a major undertaking.  I had to make sure I had dinner before setting out in search of a phone booth.  My pockets jingled with coins and I dragged friends along (who knows if the queueing got too long and one had to go to a toilet).  Without a friend, one could easily lose a place in a line.  Then once we made the call, we had to talk super fast cos the coins were jingling super fast into the bottomless maw of the telecommunications company.  Keeping in touch with friends meant letters, movies and treks out to a meeting place.  And if one lost touch with a friend, one prayed some miracle or twist of fate connected friends again. But now... NOW.. the Internet has turned the world of social networking onto its head.  When I learned about emailing, I thought "Wow.." but I had to know people's email addresses.  It had to be correct right down to each dot.  Then my sister badgered me to try o...

Colours RGB

There's one little thing about the WWW that drives me crazy...and that is how one little number or one little variation in the code can play havoc with the way your webpage displays. Once upon a time, I used to spend weeks just playing with the RGB codes.  Change one number and the colour would change.  It was like having your personal colour palette..just that it's in numbers and ABCs.  It got to the point when I'd look at a colour and go,"Hmmm, that's a CD0023..."  Yeah, sick, I know.  But I tend to get obsessive that way. Here's a good website to help pick out great colour matches.  Not only for webpages but for clothes as well...

Bill Gates vs. General Motors:

For all of us who feel only the deepest love and affection for the way computers have enhanced our lives, read on. At a recent computer expo (COMDEX), Bill Gates reportedly compared the computer industry with the auto industry and stated, "If GM had kept up with technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving $25.00 cars that got 1,000 miles to the gallon." In response to Bill's comments, General Motors issued a press release stating: If GM had developed technology like Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with the following characteristics : 1. For no reason whatsoever, your car would crash........ Twice a day. 2. Every time they repainted the lines in the road, you would have to buy a new car. 3. Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no reason. You would have to pull to the side of the road, close all of the windows, ...

Crazy About E-books

One of the best things that ever happened to me was discovering electronic books. Yeah, well, it was a simple ol' pdf document. And it was ages ago... but the idea of being able to carry puh-lenty of books in my palm was mindblowing. Now I've stuffed my PDA with almost 50 books and they save my life everytime I have to wait for something or someone. I get really edgy and fidgety if I have nothing to do, so having a book to read is restful on the nerves. Anyway when I get irritated, I get mouthy. And my mouth tends to move a few steps ahead of my brain. So the e-books save a lot of people a lot of grief. IF they grieve over my words lah.. Anyway, I've adjusted pretty well to the electronic books, considering how I can drool over crisp new printed pages. Aaah, nothing like a whiff of a freshly opened book. But I'm willing to trade in the whiffs for the easy access to lotsa books. Best of all, I can download a book within minutes of purchase online. No more wait...

Lovely lovely Tech Gadgets

Was in Midvalley Megamall last Thursday.  Drooled over the latest HP Ipaq... but didn't care for the price tag.  Not while I have humongous credit card bills to clear.  So I console myself by surfing the gadget sites and hanging out in MyPDACafe.com .  And by upgrading software in my PDA and downloading more pretty themes at PocketPCThemes.com and Pocket McDeb .  Well, I suppose going nuts over PDAs is much cheaper than going nuts over cars.  That hobby cost me a bomb.

Income Tax E-Filing

Together with thousands of other procrastinators, I sweated bullets trying to access the LHDNM and DigiCert sites last night.  Never mind that we were given a month's extension.  Never mind that I've been submitting income tax returns for nearly 13 years now... I had to read a newspaper article about the queues at LHDNM branches before I got off my backside. The queer thing is that I'd already completed the form more than a month ago.  All I had to do was spend about 5 minutes online.  Why do I do this to myself every year?  Hubby steamed about it... HE sent his by good ol' snail mail ages ago.  Luckily the World Cup could distract him a bit. I think the LHDNM officers think we are idiots. Heh.

Virus Worm BRONTOK

*stares mournfully at deleted files* Someone put a virus in my office PC... and I brought it home to my home PC which has the latest antivirus signature files.  Being the efficient creature it is, it healed 6 of 17 infected files and deleted 11 files that it couldn't heal.  I KNOW KNOW KNOW it's better deleted than causing trouble and spreading trouble and making mini BRONTOKs... but I still feel sad... And I don't know what's going to happen with the files in my PC that I'm going to scan with AVG.  Well I don't have original software so I must be satisfied with AVG.  Good AVG.  Smart AVG.  Clever AVG.  If only it didn't kill files so efficiently... I hope all of you update your antivirus software at least once a week.  You do, don't you?
